Eli Lilly was founded in the distant year of 1876. At first, it was a small laboratory that produced medications in gelatine capsules. The company began to produce a product called Succus Alterans in 1883: it was successfully used to treat venereal diseases. In 1921, Eli Lilly was the first one to begin producing insulin and remained one of the leaders in this area for decades. In 1940s, it began to produce penicillin, and then erythromycin and vancomycin. Successful production of antibiotics let the company’s turnover exceed $1 billion. It had more than 23 000 employees and absorbed a lot of other medical firms – Eli Lilly turned into a huge concern.    

In 1982, humulin (human insulin) was developed thanks to genetic engineering. In 1987, fluoxetine (Prozac) emerged as a medication for treating depression. In 1992, the sales volume of Prozac exceeded $1 billion.   

As for the drugs used by athletes, especially bodybuilders, Lilly Humatrope - recombinant human growth hormone - enjoys the highest demand. Bodybuilders began to use Humatrope because it boosts the natural production of somatropin, thus leading to muscle mass growth.

The company is named after its founder, Colonel Eli Lilly, a Civil War veteran from 1861 to 1865. In 1876, he founded a drug laboratory in Indianopolis. One of the main innovations that brought the company success was the production of medicines in gelatin capsules. The company was incorporated as a corporation in 1880, a board of directors was established, and shares were distributed among friends and relatives. Colonel Lilly led the company until his death in 1898, under the direction of his sons and grandchildren until 1953.

The first successful drug was Succus Alterans («strengthening juice»), used in venereal diseases. It began production in 1883 and allowed the company to significantly accelerate its growth.

In 1921, the company partnered with the University of Toronto to develop a method of industrial production of insulin, and two years later began producing it, consistently maintaining its leadership in the US (in the early 1990s it controlled 75% of the insulin market in the US). In the 1940s it was one of the first to release penicillin and later other antibiotics, erythromycin and vancomycin. In the 1960s, a new antibiotic, cephalosporin[4], was introduced. In 1934, a representative office was opened in London. Lilly Endowment (Lilly Endowment) was founded in 1937.
